HIGH SCHOOL Students
Who says smart isn’t black? Who says smart isn’t cool? Students in the Du Bois Society understand that being the smartest person in the room not only is cool but that excelling academically is about the "blackest", most important thing they can do.
High School students in the W.E.B. Du Bois Society Program are called Du Bois Scholars. Du Bois Scholars are African-American 9th - 12th grade students of diverse economic backgrounds who attend public, independent, and religious high schools in metro Atlanta.
Membership in the Du Bois Society Academic Enrichment Network is open to African-American high school students with a GPA of 3.5 or better. In inner-city public schools and in exclusive private institutions, in largely white suburban schools and in all-black parochial schools, there are many black students who are building records of academic excellence. It is the purpose of the Du Bois Society to celebrate these high-achieving black students, and, through them, to communicate to other students the attainability, value, and historical significance of academic success to life success.
The Du Bois Society’s enrichment program is a 20-week program built around a series of six seminars that focus on the history and current status of people of African descent in the United States and a series of interesting field trips aimed at broadening their exposure to new ideas, careers, and opportunities. The seminars are headed by leading black faculty at some of the outstanding colleges and universities in the Atlanta area. Participation in the program provides high achieving black students the opportunity to interact with their academic peers in an environment that highlights and celebrates their accomplishments in school while enriching and stimulating their intellect. Du Bois Scholars mentor middle school students through our Step UP program aimed at encouraging younger students to excel in the classroom and achieve their fullest potential.
